Dendrobium senile — the 'Old Man Orchid' or White-Haired Dendrobium — is a miniature epiphytic species native to Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos. Named for the distinctive fuzzy white hairs that cover its short pseudobulbs and stems, giving the plant a soft, almost felted look. In spring and summer it produces bright butter-yellow flowers with a strong lemon fragrance — one of the more memorable scents in the Dendrobium genus.
Grower's choice: All plants are hand-selected for health. Photos are representative of current stock — exact size and growth count will vary from plant to plant.
Care:
- Light: Bright, indirect light. Tolerates more light than most Dendrobiums; morning sun is welcome.
- Water: Water regularly during active growth in spring and summer; let the medium dry between waterings. Reduce significantly in winter dormancy.
- Dormancy: D. senile is partially deciduous — expect leaf drop in late fall/early winter. This is normal. Withhold most water until new growth resumes in spring; this dry rest is what triggers spring blooming.
- Feed: Half-strength balanced orchid fertilizer twice a month during active growth; stop feeding during dormancy.
- Medium: Best mounted or grown in a small basket with sphagnum or fine bark — replicates the epiphytic habit.
- Temperature: Warm to intermediate (60-85°F). Good air circulation is important.
Insulation and/or Heat Pack strongly recommended for shipping when temperatures drop below 50°F.
